Catch next week’s Coen Brothers Film Experience entry on Wednesday November 4th: Barton Fink.
Hit the jump for my Bottom Line.

The Bottom Line: 4.5/5.. “Miller’s Crossing” is now my favorite Coen Brothers film. Obviously I am only three movies in but I can confidently state this. It has all the makings of a good movie -the gangster era setting, the tommy guns, the actors, direction etc.. but what sets it apart from other similar films is the smooth as silk dialogue, its delivery, and the excellent characterizations. The movie follows Gabriel Byrne’s character as he manipulates three crime bosses into essentially an outcome that we never really find out until the final few minutes of the movie. What makes this so enjoyable is that Byrne’s character is so well built that at no time could you even guess what his true motivations were – Was this careless egoism? Maybe dumb as shit gambling? Or perhaps he had a read on all of these bosses from the get go with a clear end result in mind? Any of these reasons could easily fit naturally with his character.
If you haven’t seen it yet or it’s been a while since the last time you got a chance to experience “Miller’s Crossing”, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so. Once you have, let me know what you thought. I hadn’t heard much about the movie before I watched it for this film series and I’m curious to see what everyone thinks of it. Did you like it? Where does it fall on your Coen list of favs? Leave your comments below or find me on Twitter!
